Geranyl Acetate helps give cannabis a distinctive floral, fruity scent that recreational cannabis users are sure to appreciate. In addition to the pleasant smell, this terpenoid has also shown its antimicrobial properties when combined with other terpenoids. While more research is sorely needed on the matter, one study completed in 2011 showed that an essential oil comprised of geranyl acetate along with other terpenoids found in cannabis “displayed moderate to high antimicrobial activity” against bacteria and fungi. Because the research focuses on a combination of terpenoids, it is difficult to definitively say that geranyl acetate can be used as an antimicrobial on its own. Look for studies in the near future to further define the medicinal capabilities of this terpenoid.
