What is Lupus?

Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks a person’s own tissue, which causes inflammation, swelling, pain, and nerve damage. Other common symptoms include headaches, fatigue, rash, and joint pain.

How can marijuana help?

Since there is no cure for lupus, marijuana can only be used to treat the symptoms of the autoimmune disease. However, marijuana has proven to be an effective pain reliever and anti-inflammatory aid. The endocannabinoid system controls how we experience pain and how our bodies respond to inflammation. Cannabis contains phytocannabinoids, and when these phytocannabinoids react with CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout the endocannabinoid system, pain can be decreased. These same receptors can also reduce inflammation, as numerous studies have shown in the past. For patients who have treatment-resistant lupus — or would rather medicate naturally with little to no negative side effects — cannabis is a proven way to effectively manage the symptoms of lupus.
