What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that cause optic nerve damage. Usually, the cause of this damage is due to abnormally high pressure inside the eye. If left untreated, Glaucoma can cause patients to go blind.
How can marijuana help?
To be clear, cannabis does not cure patients of glaucoma; it only helps relieve the effects of the condition. Cannabis is a popular, alternative glaucoma medication, not only because it help relieve intraocular pressure, but also because it works as a natural sleep aid. A study completed by John C. Merritt, MD, titled, Glaucoma, Hypertension, and Marijuana, supports the usefulness of cannabis as a glaucoma treatment. In the study, Merritt found that marijuana containing 1.8 to 2.8% THC consistently lowered intraocular pressure in open-angle and heterogenous glaucoma by, “decreas(ing) aqueous production mediated through the pressure-dependent portion of aqueous formation.” Other studies, such as, Cannabinoids and Glaucoma, lend even more credibility to the topic by once again proving that cannabinoids can lower intraocular pressure. The findings reinforce the fact that glaucoma patients who seek an alternative to pharmaceutical drugs may find relief with cannabis.
